Palm Pre to synchronise with iTunes
Posted on 29 May 2009 at 09:26
Palm has announced that its hotly-anticipated Pre phone will synchronise with Apple's iTunes application on both PC and Mac platforms.
Palm's media synch, which is part of the new webOS operating system, is designed to synchronise seamlessly with iTunes, letting users transfer DRM-free music, photos and videos to the Pre. DRM-protected music will not copy.
"We designed Palm media sync to be an easy and elegant way for you to take the content you own and put it on Pre, and it's just one of the ways we think you'll be amazed by webOS," said Jon Rubinstein, executive chairman of Palm. "We've had an overwhelming response since we introduced Pre at CES, and with availability just days away, we can't wait to let everyone see firsthand what the excitement is all about."
We were unable to find out if iTunes synchronisation was an official deal between Apple and Palm. If it's not, problems could arise in the future. Apple is well-known for changing iTunes regularly, stopping it from working with third-party products, such as NAS devices that have built-in iTunes servers for streaming music.
Fortunately, the Pre isn't tied into iTunes only. For those people that don't want to download Apple's increasingly-bloated iTunes (it currently stands at a whopping 71.3MB, with regular updates of a similar size), the Pre can also act as USB storage, so that you can drag-and-drop media files directly on to it.
The Pre is due to be launched in the US on June 6 2009, but no UK launch date has been set.
