O2 offers free SMS alerts from Twitter
Posted on 15 Jul 2009 at 10:39
O2 has announced that it has reached an agreement with Twitter, the hugely talked about micro blogging service, which will enable the network operator to offer free text alerts from Twitter for free from August.
This comes in addition to the similar, existing agreements the network operator has in place with Facebook and Bebo.
O2 says that the deal allows its customers to receive tweets from chosen friends, as well as for @mentions and direct messages, via SMS. Customers will also be able to send and reply to tweets via SMS, using their text bundle (or at the 10p standard network rate).
"We believe that mobile will soon become the most popular way of accessing social networking sites, giving real time access to tweets and status updates wherever you are," said Antony Douglas, Head of Content for O2. "The agreements we now have in place with Twitter and the other key sites brings this a step closer, making it quick and easy for O2 customers to access their favourite social networks straight from their mobile."
This agreement will "form a framework" for future deals between Twitter and Telef?nica owned networks across the globe, the company added.
