Apple approves push Gmail app
Posted on 11 Aug 2009 at 12:25
The developer of an app that promises push Gmail for the iPhone and iPod touch has succeeded in gaining Apple’s approval.
Unfortunately, GPush’s debut on the iTunes App Store was interrupted by an issue with the developers’ own servers, but that shouldn’t distract from the Tiverias Apps’ achievement.
Many might not have bothered at all, given Apple’s recent refusal to accept apps bearing the Google stamp, whether it’s the third-party VoiceCentral or Google’s own location mapper.
Presumably the key to the developer’s success is the way in which GPush integrates with Apple’s Mail app. While GPush notifies you the instance that Gmail has received a new message, the message itself is read in the Mail app (though there is an option to display it as an alert on the standby screen).
Alternatively it may be an indication that Apple is relaxing its too-tight restrictions following comments by marketing boss Phil Schiller, who accepted that the company had made mistakes but intends to “learn and quickly improve”.
Tiverias Apps says on its Twitter feed that the app will be available again just as soon as the “scaling bugs” have been fixed.
