Econav 435 satnav claims to save petrol

Vexia has announced that a new satnav that it claims will save you so much petrol, it will pay for itself within six months.

The Econav 435 satnav device will be on sale in the UK in September and saves money by advising you of the most economical way to drive. It does this by calculating variables, including the make and model of your car and the number of passengers. It then determines the ideal route, and while you drive it determines the best gear to use and the ideal speed. An Accelerator Pedal Indicator tells you how efficiently you are driving.

Vexia claims that the average driver travels 11,000 miles per year, incurring a fuel bill of more than £1,800. By using the Econav 435, it reckons you could save up to 30 per cent of your fuel bill, and reduce your carbon emissions by up to one ton per year in the process. In this way, Vexia believes you could earn back the cost of the Econav 435 in just six months of usage.

The Econav 435 Regional maps version will cost £170, while a European maps version will cost £220. Even with the claimed cost savings, this is quite expensive for a satnav, considering it doesn't have the intelligent routing and traffic features of competitors such as TomTom, Navigon and Mio. In addition, we're not sure that drivers will appreciate being told how to drive by a computer, even if it ends up saving money.
