MEDL to launch battery powered 13in USB monitor
Posted on 24 Mar 2010 at 10:30
Hong Kong-based MEDL Technology has announced the ultimate accessory for laptop users who need that bit of extra screen real estate while out and about: a self-contained portable 13" second display.
Designed to be used with any laptop featuring spare USB port, the aptly named 'The Panel' is a lightweight 13" second display which features an integrated battery, allowing use away from the mains - for up to a fairly impressive five hours.
While USB-connected secondary monitors aren't a new idea, The Panel is the first battery-powered monitor to reach the heady heights of 13in - and represents a far more useful device than most of the 7in and under displays currently cluttering up the market.
The advantage of using a USB connector rather than the more traditional VGA or DVI is that The Panel is compatible with pretty much any Windows or Mac OS laptop on the market today - including netbooks and other small-form-factor devices such as the MacBook Air.
Offering a WXGA resolution - that's 1,440x900 - along with a low-powered LED backlight, The Panel could well prove a hit with business users looking to make impromptu presentations while out and about - depending on price.
According to Engadget, MEDL is looking to secure enough funding to make a production batch for sale towards the end of the year at an expected sub-$350 (£230) price point.
