Asus confirms AMD six-core CPU compatibility

Asus has confirmed which of its motherboards will support AMD's unannounced six-core processors. The new CPUs, codenamed Thurban, are due to be announced shortly, but there has been much speculation about what motherboard chipsets would be compatible with them.

Asus, among others, confused the issue somewhat by heavily promoting their new 8-series motherboards as being Thurban compatible. However, there was no mention of older 7-series boards, but we were fairly certain that a simple BIOS update should also make many of these compatible, see our Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 review.

The company has now confirmed that the following boards will be compatible: M4A89GTD PRO, M4A89GTD Pro/USB3, Crosshair III Formula, M4N72-E, M4N82 DELUXE, M4N75TD, M4N98TD EVO, M4A79 Deluxe, M4A79T Deluxe, M4A78T-E, M4A78-E and M4A78-E SE. These cover AMD's 890 and 790 (both GX and FX) plus Nvidia nForce 750a and 980a chipsets.

Unfortunately, 785-based boards are not included. This means ourcurrent Budget Buy award winner, the Asus M4A785D-M Pro , won't be able to make the upgrade to Thurban. Though it's still a great buy for those who don't need that much processing power.
