New iPod touch to arrive in September, says John Lewis

High street behemoth John Lewis has said that there will be a substantial refresh to the iPod touch in September.
The news came at the company’s Christmas look-ahead event in London, where the major features that the fourth generation device will likely carry were unveiled by Rob Hennessey, an audio and telecoms device Buyer at John Lewis. He said that his claims were based on information given to him by suppliers.
The headline upgrades will be the addition of a five megapixel camera with a flash, which will also be able to shoot 720p HD video; the same accelerometer and gyroscope that was introduced with the iPhone 4; and FaceTime video calling over WiFi, suggesting that the device will also include a built-in microphone.
Hennessey also said that the device would likely be targeted at the younger generation and sold as a multimedia device rather than a music player.
We expect Apple to also upgrade the chipset to an A4 processor, which was first unveiled when the iPad launched and is also at the heart of the company's iPhone 4.
Apple has understandably remained mum on the rumours, but they do make a degree of sense. While we’re a little sceptical about FaceTime’s inclusion, it would be strange for a company of John Lewis’s stature to make outlandish claims at the unveiling of its Christmas sales strategy.
