Harrison LP exposes high Amazon prices

When Amazon launched its music downloads service last month, much was made of the large number of tracks that were priced 10 cents less than they cost on Apple's iTunes Store.

But the release this week of George Harrison's solo recordings demonstrates that iTunes is not always the more expensive option.

Harrison's first record - arguably the best solo work by any former Beatle and certainly the best-selling - is an EMI release, which means both stores are selling it sans DRM. Nominally that means 99 cents per track on Amazon and a relatively whopping $1.29 on iTunes. But when it comes to buying the complete album, the situation is reversed.

Apple asks $9.99 for the whole 28-track album; Amazon wants $13.55, and that doesn't include the digital booklet you get with iTunes.

So when Amazon downloads launch in the UK - they will, won't they? - beware that all that glisters may not be gold.
