Apple "number one US music retailer"
Posted on 3 Apr 2008 at 09:41
Apple has overtaken Wal-Mart to become the largest music retailer in the US, according to a leaked email.
Figures from the email sent by research firm NPD show that Apple's iTunes Store has 19% of the US market in January, well ahead of Wal-Mart's 15%.
In February NPD revealed that Apple had overtaken Best Buy to take the number two spot, at the same time that Apple announced it had sold four billion songs since it launched the iTunes Store in April 2003.
The email, a copy of which was seen by Ars Technica, notes that downloads sales have increased sharply in recent months, as CD sales continue to decline. Almost half of US teenagers bought not a single CD in 2007, it notes, compared to a third in 2006.
