A survey commissioned by British Music Rights has discovered that 14 to 24 year olds have, on average, over 800 illegally downloaded music tracks on their MP3 players. The group also says that nearly 95 per cent of respondents have copied music in some form.
The research, carried out by the University of Hertfordshire, revealed that nearly two-thirds of young people in the UK download music using unlicensed peer-to-peer filesharing networks. It also claims that the average monthly download across all age groups is 53 tracks, with some respondents admitting that they copy up to 5,000 tracks a month.
The survey also highlighted that music is a top priority amongst young people. When asked what three items they would take with them to a desert island, 73 per cent of respondent said they would take their music collection. Furthermore, 92 per cent of 14 to 17 year olds said that they have an MP3 player, and the survey shows that each of those MP3 players have an average of 842 illegally downloaded tracks on them.
"For the music and technology sectors, the findings of this survey are likely to prove both challenging and a cause for optimism. However, there are clearly huge opportunities to realise the full potential of music in the digital market while satisfying the demands of both industry and fan alike," read the report.
