Dell readying digital music player
Posted on 30 Jul 2008 at 11:36
Dell is developing its own digital music player to rival Apple's iPod, according to reports. The PC manufacturer has been testing the player in recent months and speculation suggests it could be launched in September.
Dell is looking to dent Apple's market leading position, and surpass recent efforts from Sony and Microsoft to make an impact. According to the Wall Street Journal, Dell's music player features a small navigation screen and basic button controls to scroll through music playlists.
It would connect to music services online via its Wi-Fi connection and could be priced at less than £50, reports the Journal. Dell withdrew from the music market following the disappointing reception it received to its "DJ Ditty Player" in 2003.
This time, if the PC maker goes ahead with plans to launch the new music player, the strategy will be different, said Michael Tatelman, Dell's vice president of consumer sales, according to the paper. Dell is working on software portable PCs to let users download and organise music and movies from various online sources, reported the Journal.
