Apple specs iTunes LP
Posted on 27 Nov 2009 at 10:28
Apple has released the specification for iTunes LP and iTunes Extras to enable any artist or label to create and package content in the new format.
The company revealed last month that Extras and LP would be open formats, following claims that it was charging $10,000 to produce each “LP”.
iTunes LPs will typically contain lyrics, liner notes, band photos and performance videos as well as the music tracks themselves, while Extras will be video releases packaged as virtual DVDs, with cast interviews, exclusive clips, behind-the-scenes footage and so on.
Development shouldn’t prove too difficult, as the format uses web standards combined with TuneKit, a collection of resources provided by Apple.
Initially, Apple is only accepting a limited number of submissions but is expecting to have an automated process up and running by the end of the first quarter of 2010.
