Sony's NW-A3000 looks like a bar of soap, but fits comfortably in the hand. A firmware upgrade lets it play WMA files, but it won't play protected files from download sites other than Sony's Connect store. Sony's bundled headphones are very good.

Unless you want to buy music online, the NW-A3000's excellent battery life and sound quality make it a great choice.
