Our Rating
Like Sony's MDR-NC11 earphones (reviewed in What's New, Shopper November 2006), Koss's QZ77s fit in the ear to block environmental noise and use active electronics to reduce it further.
They're supplied with spare foam plugs, an aeroplane adaptor and a drawstring bag that looks like the lining of a pair of swimming trunks.
The QZ77 earphones feel strong but are made from gaudy silver plastic. They don't come with an instruction manual, so fitting them is a matter of trial and error. You need to pinch each earphone's foam plug before it will fit snugly into your ear. We found them comfortable only when pointing forwards. The noise-cancelling electronics are powered by a single AAA battery, which is housed in a cheap-feeling silver box that's not much smaller than a mobile phone. It has a rotating volume control, and can be worn around the neck or clipped to clothing.
These earphones produce plenty of bass, but they don't sound particularly clear or detailed. They quieten external sounds well, but switching on their noise-reduction circuit makes little further improvement. As with Sony's MDR-NC11 earphones, white noise from the electronics is more distracting than any sounds that manage to make it through the earplugs. At this price, we expect headphones that sound great and feel better made.
