Spotify to add live concert broadcasts

Popular music streaming service Spotify has announced a surprise addition to its list: a live nightclub set, which will be broadcast simultaneously on the 5th of April.
The event, which will be broadcast on Spotify live from the Koko nightclub, marks the start of an interesting divergence from the company's core competency of instant-access music from a wide back catalogue.
The set includes some big-name acts, such as The Naked and Famous, Pony Pony Run Run, Delphi, and a DJ set by Elly Jackson of La Roux - and while the music style is unlikely to appeal to every single one of the company's one million paying users, it will surely prove an interesting experiment.
The company has indicated that this event marks the start of a new push for the Spotify service, and that additional live events will be added to the roster. What isn't clear yet is whether users will have access to a recorded version of the event after the broadcast is over - although this will likely be up to the event's organisers and the rights Spotify is able to negotiate.
The addition of live event broadcast comes shortly before Spotify is expected to launch in the US, adding a significant new market to its offering and propelling the company past the one million paying subscriber mark it recently announced. Whether it can hold its own against rival US services such as Pandora, however, remains to be seen.
