PowerDVD 10 provides '3D upscaling'
Posted on 17 Mar 2010 at 11:45
With 3D Blu-ray movies yet to hit store shelves, and HD video playback starting to look a little old hat, the latest version of PowerDVD could have found itself in an uneasy position with few new features to trumpet. Thankfully, PowerDVD 10, announced today by CyberLink, has managed to dodge this fate with the inclusion of an exciting 3D upscaling technology that turns 2D DVDs into 3D.
The technology uses a clever algorithm that studies the video played and tries to calculate the depth of the various elements on the screen. In a demonstration we saw a couple of weeks ago it worked surprisingly well, though it's certainly dependent on the kind of scene being displayed. Animated content works well, as it's easy for the software to see objects with consistently defined edges, don't expect subtle depth of field effects in landscape shots.
CyberLink promises full support for 3D Blu-ray movies when they appear. There's also promise of faster Blu-ray loading times, advanced DVD upscaling and full support for video acceleration via ATI Stream or Nvidia CUDA. A new universal media player has also been added, so you can playback all your media files from one interface.
Review code was sent out very late, we only received it yesterday, and so we'll bring you a full review in the next few days.
