D-Link DSM-520 review

Verdict:

The D-Link is a good media receiver, with plenty of audio and video outputs.

Our Rating 4 stars out of 5

Although the Pinnacle SoundBridge Radio is perfect for streaming audio files to your bedroom, you'll need something a bit more versatile for the living room.

The D-Link DSM-520 could be just the ticket as it can handle a huge range of audio and video file types, and stream them over a wired or wireless network. Better still, as it looks like a slimline DVD player it won't look out of place perched underneath your TV.

An increasing number of households are getting HD TVs and the D-Link's HDMI output is ideal for connecting to the latest displays. However, there's no component output, so those with older high-definition displays should look elsewhere. There are all the usual options for standard TVs though, with SCART, S-Video and composite outputs provided. On the audio side, you can connect to a surround sound amplifier using one of the two S/PDIF outputs.

The DSM520's on-screen interface makes it easy to find and play your files, and there are shortcut buttons on the remote for quick file-type browsing. D-Link provides its own file serving software, which is basic but easy-to-use, and works fine. Setting up the wireless connection is straightforward, with an easy-to-use wizard guiding you through the process. There's support for both WPA and WEP security, so it's certain to work with your current settings. There's also an Ethernet port for those preferring a wired network.

There are good reasons to use a wired network, too. HD video and DVDs that have been copied to a hard disk will stream wirelessly, but only at short range with no obstructions. If you have a less-than-ideal setup in your home, you'll suffer from dropped frames and audio glitches. Other types of media like standard resolution video encoded in DivX, audio files and photos will stream wirelessly without a hitch.

If you're looking for a media receiver with a HDMI output, then the D-Link DSM-520 is a good choice.
