Our Rating
The TVMax+ is a Mac mini-shaped box that combines an analogue TV tuner with the ability to encode footage from other analogue sources, such as a camcorder or VCR, into a digital format, ready to be watched and edited on your Mac.
Its key benefit is that it encodes video in real time, so you could have an iPod-ready version of your Hi-8 wedding video, for example, in the time it takes to play the video from beginning to end.
The box has inputs for S-video, composite video, and a co-axial antenna input, which can be used for a TV aerial or VCR. It uses the TV online electronic programme guide, the same one used by EyeTV, and can schedule recordings.
Its weakness is that it's an analogue-only tuner, so you want be able to use it to watch Freeview channels.
If your primary interest is in digitising analogue footage, rather than watching digital TV, the TV Max+ is a powerful video cruncher, although more expensive than the EyeTV 250 Plus.
