Apple boosts power of AirPort hubs
Posted on 3 Mar 2009 at 14:38
Apple has introduced upgrades to two of its AirPort products, implementing technology designed to improve the performance of wireless networking.
AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule now support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz dual-band networking, enabling all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically and thereby increasing performance, range and compatibility.
Apple has also added a Guest Network feature, that lets you set up a secondary network for friends and visitors with Internet-only access so that you don’t have to hand out your WiFi password.
The AirPort Extreme Base Station costs £139 while Time Capsule, which also enables wireless backups from Time Machine, costs £229 or 500GB and £379 for 1TB of storage.
Both devices support wireless networking with Macs and Windows XP and Vista PCs. Both platforms can also use Time Capsule as a remote, shared hard drive while MobileMe subscribers can access it over the internet.
