Several desktops can be linked to a wireless network using standard network cards, a hub and a single 'access point'.

However, if you've only one or two desktops, it's cheaper to use adapters like this to fit wireless PC Cards in them all. The network still runs fast enough for home use, and there'll be no cables at all!
