Wi-Fi standard approved at last
Posted on 14 Sep 2009 at 16:53
The IEEE has finally ratified the 802.11n Wi-Fi standard, seven years after it was first proposed and several years after wireless device makers including Apple began implementing it.
Those manufacturers will no longer need to put Draft-N on their boxes, but owners existing Draft-N products should not have to worry about compatibility as the specification for the standard was finalised some time ago.
The Wi-Fi Alliance has also been certifying 802.11n devices over the past couple of years, to ensure compatibility with the standard.
If devices do need an update, then firmware patches should be available at some stage on the manufacturers’ websites.
