Netgear SC101 review
The SC101 is a NAS kit to which you must add your own PATA hard disk or disks.
Happily, this is fairly painless, and no screws are required. We fitted a pair of Maxtor MaXLine Plus II 250GB hard disks to create a 500GB NAS for around £215, which works out at an impressive 43p per gigabyte.
We configured the disks in a RAID 1 array using Netgear's software. Normally, you have to use two disks of the same size for RAID 1, but the SC101 requires only that the free space on the second disk is the same size or greater than the size of your first disk.
Playing our DVD test movie off the SC101 produced a generally smooth image, albeit with slight pauses when skipping backwards or forwards to a different chapter. Performance in our file transfer tests was a little below average.
It's a shame the Netgear is unable to drive an external USB disk or printer, and that you have to install Netgear's software on every PC that you want to access the SC101. However, it is a very inexpensive way of adding extra storage to your network
