Our Rating
Captain FTP's interface uses the same two-panel structure as Transmit, but the similarities stop there.
It uses a brushed-metal interface, which, unfortunately, already feels clunky and dated. It has control buttons along the base and above each list, all of which are much too hard to decipher. Additionally, it is far too easy to accidentally drop items into folders in its list view, and while it supports FTP and SFTP it doesn't handle WebDav/iDisk transfers.
On a more positive note, it has a New File With BBEdit feature, a Dashboard widget, built-in text and image previewing features, and a 'Crowznest' feature that provides a 'hot folders' synchronising feature complete with menubar icon for configuring and management.
Captain FTP is certainly a capable file transfer tool, but the limited transfer protocol options and the somewhat unattractive and awkward user interface mean that it just can't match up to the competition.
