Can’t connect to 192.168.1.1? Here’s how to find yours and your router’s IP address

Router

If you need to find the IP address of your computer or router, we show you how from practically any device

If you’re trying to access your wireless router or find out your network settings, you’re on the right page. In this guide, I’m going to show you how to find out the information that you need, from practically any device connected to your network. This includes showing you how to find you your router’s actual address, as well as deciphering your device’s IP details, too. The brilliant news is that it’s all very straight-forward and doesn’t require any real technical speciality. Before I get into the actual details, it’s worth doing some troubleshooting first, just in case there’s a problem that’s preventing access.

Troubleshooting

If you can’t access your router and you’ve found this page, there are a few things that you should try before you dive into the more detailed instructions below, as you may find that they’ll solve the issue.

  1. Retype your router’s address in – Some web browsers trigger a Google search when you type in an IP address, taking you to Google rather than your router. Try typing the address in again, but this time use http:// in front of the IP address.
  2. Check which network you’re connected to – Make sure that you’re connected to the right network and that your computer or phone hasn’t joined another network by mistake.
  3. Connect via a cable – If you’re using Wi-Fi, try and connect via a cable connection from a computer instead to see if you can. If this fixes it, check out my complete Wi-Fi fixing guide.

Finding IP addresses

Assuming that you’ve been through the short troubleshooting steps above, you’re now ready to find out what your IP address is and what your router’s IP address really is. I’ve given instructions for how to find this using Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, so you can use pretty much every network-connected device that you might have.

Windows

Click on the Start button, type ‘adapter’ and select View network connections. From the list, click on the live network connection icon (it will be blue) and, from the toolbar, click View status of this connection. If you can’t see this option, you may have to click the ‘>>’ icon in the toolbar first. Click the details box and a new dialog box will pop up. The IPV4 address listed is your computer’s address. Your router’s IP address is the IPv4 Default Gateway.

Windows IP address

Mac

Open up System Preferences from the Apple menu and select network. Choose your active connection, which will be coloured green. For wired (Ethernet) connections, you’ll see your IP address listed under IP Address, and your router’s address is listed under Router. For Wireless connections click Advanced, then click TCP/IP. You’ll see your IP Address and Router addresses listed there.

Mac IP address

iPhone/iPad

Go to Settings, Wi-Fi and click the ‘I’ icon next to the network you’re connected to (it’s at the top of the list and has a tick next to it. Your IP address and router’s IP address are clearly marked.

iOS IP address

Android

Android, annoyingly, only shows you your device’s current IP address, but it won’t show you your router’s address. To get this information, you need an app, such as Network Info II. Once you’ve installed it, connect to your Wi-Fi network, run the software and tap the WiFi tab. You’ll see your address under IP and your router’s address is the Gateway.
