Nokia premieres ultra-modern premium phone 12:34PM, Tuesday 19th August 2008
Nokia has unveiled its new premium mobile phone, using materials more commonly found in sports cars, space shuttles and modern buildings than in mobile phones. The 8800 Carbon Arte is engineered from carbon fibre, stainless steel, titanium and polished glass to give it a feeling of exclusivity.

According to Nokia, the thinking behind the handset's design is to incorporate minimalist, seamless surfaces to give it an enhanced perceived value and quality. The Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte also has soundtracks and wallpapers created exclusively for the range.

The phone has 3G capabilities, a 3.2 megapixel camera an OLED display and 4GB built-in memory. It also has Nokia's anti-fingerprint coating to reduce smudges on metal and glass.

Among the phone's features is a tap-for-time feature, allowing consumers to tap the steel surface below the display twice for a clock to appear on the screen. The phone also has a turn-to-mute silencing mechanism, which allows individuals to silence incoming calls by simply turning the phone over, screen-side down.

The 8800 Carbon Arte is being launched with its own range of accessories, including a Bluetooth touch-sensitive volume control headset, a desk stand and a leather carrying case.

The phone will be available in the 3rd quarter of 2008, and it doesn't come cheap. Nokia has announced that its estimated retail price is a whopping £870 before subsidies and taxes.
