The Cell TV is actually two separate parts: a set-top box containing the Cell processor, which will handle all of the TV's processing, and a high-quality LCD display with a resolution of 3,820x2,160 and an LED backlight.

"The Cell processor is way beyond everything used in TV today," said Scott Ramirez, vice president of marketing for Toshiba's TV Group.

Cell processor was three times faster than the processors used in the company's current models, and is capable of processing each 1080p frame of video three times. The result should be cleaner video, better upscaling and more backlight control on the LCD TV.

CELL TV will be more than just a TV and the set-top box is capable of recording six HD channels at once. No details were released of what a UK version will look like. We'll bring you a video look at CELL TV later in the week.

Otherwise, Toshiba launched a similar range of TV technologies to rival LG's new models. These include TVs with 240Hz image processing for smoother movement and no motion blur (called ClearScan 240 by Toshiba), and full-array LED backlights. The company also announced that streaming media features for its TVs and standalone network players for the ultimate on-demand TV.
