LaCie USB Speakers review

LaCie is best known for its range of storage products, so we were surprised by its new USB Speakers.

The mug-sized speakers use a single USB cable for both power and audio and even come with a carry pouch. The captive USB cable can't be replaced if it gets damaged, though. The speakers were recognised by both Windows XP and Vista without having to install any drivers.

We were pleasantly surprised by the good sound quality. There's plenty of volume and bass for such small speakers. Vocals sound clear and detailed, although the treble is a bit harsh.

LaCie's USB Speakers are a good alternative to bulkier speaker sets if you don't have much space, or you need a portable substitute for your laptop's poor-quality speakers. If you can live with larger, mains-powered versions, however, then Logitech's X-240 speakers sound even better and cost £20 less from www.ebuyer.com.

Neil Poulton came up trumps

I was lucky enough to get these speakers for christmas having put them on my amazon wishlist. Have to say the speakers are very powerful for such a small unit. they use the surface they are on to create deeper base notes and the treble can be easily adjusted via the windows 7 speaker properties. There is a very good sound range for general use but audiophiles should stick to high quality headphones or dedicated desktop speakers. no noticeable USB interference when hard drives operate either which can blight some USB audio devices. thankfully I no longer have to resort to headphones when using my notebook. the internal squeakers were driving me nuts.
