Apple plans new Mac Pro, iMac Models
Posted on 26 Jul 2010 at 12:58
Apple is thought to be planning an update to its iMac and Mac Pro ranges of desktop computers, with the manufacturer warning of stock shortages while it clears its inventory of the old models.
The rumour of a refresh of the iMac all-in-one line of desktop computers comes courtesy of AppleInsider, which claims that Apple has warned its sales channel partners - the retailers that are responsible for all non-direct sales of Apple hardware, including the company's own Apple Stores - that there are likely to be "near-term" shortages of various models in the iMac range.
An unnamed source has even claimed that some distributors have been warned that the cheapest model, the 21.5in 3.06GHz iMac, has been discontinued completely - hinting that a brand-new replacement is due in the very near future.
As well as an update to the iMac range, Apple is apparently planning to refresh its Mac Pro workstation line-up. HardMac.com reports that one of its "better sources" claims that Apple is looking to launch new Mac Pro systems towards the end of summer for the lucrative "back to school" period.
The claimed new Mac Pro systems are expected to debut with USB 3.0 support for faster connection to external devices, along with upgraded FireWire connectivity. However, with Apple sticking to its guns over the future of high-definition entertainment being download-only, the systems are not thought to ship with Blu-ray drives.
