UPDATED: Apple dismisses new Macs rumours

Apple has dismissed rumours that new Macs are imminent by issuing a rare public statement of its plans.

Following the recent overhauls of the MacBook lines, rumours were rife that next week would see the introduction of new iMac and Mac mini models. Not so, says Apple.

“Our holiday line-up is set,” said spokesman Bill Evans.

In all likelihood, that leaves Macworld Expo in January as the next occasion when Apple will unveil new Macs, as it has at that event over many years.

Apple declined to comment on a separate report that the head of its iPod division, Tony Fadell, is leaving the company.

The Wall Street Journal said that Fadell was departing for personal reasons, to be replaced by former IBM executive Mark Papermaster.

However that appointment may be delayed by up to a year, after IBM filed a lawsuit against Papermaster, alleging that by joining Apple so soon after leaving IBM he would violate the terms on a non-compete agreement.

Fadell joined Apple in 2001 as the first member of its iPod hardware team, replacing Jon Rubinstein as senior vice president in April 2006.

UPDATE: Apple has confirmed that Fadell and his wife, Danielle Lambert, who works in Apple’s human resources departure, are leaving their jobs within the company to devote more time to their young family. Fadell will remain at Apple as an advisor to chief executive Steve Jobs.

Apple also confirmed Papermaster’s appointment, but made no mention of the IBM lawsuit.

“Mark is a seasoned leader and is going to be an excellent addition to our senior management team," said Jobs.
