NEC plans 3D all-in-one PC

NEC has planned an all-in-one PC stroke entertainment unit which promises to bring 3D to your office - possibly even before it's come to your living room.
Previewed over on Japanese-language site Impress PC Watch - and translated by Engadget - the NEC all-in-one places a Blu-ray player and Windows 7-based home computer into the body of an LCD display, like many all-in-one systems currently on the market.
Where the planned NEC device differs from the norm is in its 3D
capabilities: using a polarised display, the screen presents a true 3D image without the need for expensive shutter glasses by using the same technology as the 3D projectors found in many cinemas. Sadly, the system still requires that the user wears specially polarised glasses - although they're passive, lightweight plastic affairs that don't need charging.
By displaying two images on the screen but limiting which eye sees which image, the illusion of depth is created - although you'll obviously need source material that can make use of this effect.
Unfortunately, firm details on the specifications or pricing aren't yet available - and a release date hasn't yet been set. Impress PC Watch, however, believes that it will certainly launch before the end of the year - and possibly before summer is out - in Japan, at least.
