Time Neptune 2000+ QX review

Verdict:

Price when reviewed: (£939)

Our Rating 4 stars out of 5

Some good features, but the Neptune's power and ergonomics let it down.

Features 6/6

You get a lot for your money with Time. The core specification of this PC is solid, with a 60Gb hard disk and 256Mb of RAM. But then there's a printer, a joystick, a gamepad and a mini-digital camera to accompany them. That's one of the best bundles we've seen in quite a while.

Ergonomics 4/6

The Time's keyboard is decent and solid, if a bit plain, while its Microsoft IntelliMouse is a truly reliable rodent. The real fly in the ointment, however, is the monitor. Its focus is alright, but there's noticeable misconvergence at the edges of the screen and the power regulation is pretty poor, which could lead to an unstable images in games.

Expansion 4/6

Two free PCI slots is a bit tight, but with four USB ports plus the Audigy's FireWire port for external devices and free bays for Zip, CD and hard disk drives, we're fairly satisfied.

Performance 4/6

Like the NEC, Time's graphics card uses nVidia's GeForce 4 MX 440 chip. It's good, but it isn't powerful enough to compete with the faster cards in most of the other machines. It's a shame, as Time's core spec is pretty much the same as all the other computers here. With a decent graphics card it probably could have matched them score for score.

Overall

You get a really great bundle of extras with this PC. But that can't make up for the fact that its power and ergonomics aren't on a par with the competition.
