Adidas miCoach Fit Smart fitness band officially revealed

Adidas takes a second stab at wearable technology with the Fit Smart fitness band, but promises it isn't a Nike Fuelband rival

Adidas has officially revealed the miCoach Fit Smart fitness band, a new wearable wristband designed to help fitness fiends measure their exercise regime with an at-a-glance LED to let you know when you’re performing at your desired level. Originally leaked late last week, the company confirmed the device today at the Wearable Technologies Conference 2014.

As well as tracking pace, distance covered, burned calories and heart rate, the miCoach Fit Smart illuminates blue, green, yellow, orange and red depending on how hard you’re pushing yourself. If you’re aiming to lose weight, the band can adjust to find the best zone for burning fat, but if you’re aiming to build strength it can adapt and let you know when you’re pushing too hard.

The band will launch with a dedicated miCoach Train and Run companion app which connects via Bluetooth LE on Android and iOS. It will give athletes the ability to set and track their weekly goals, long-term training plans and individual runs. The existing app will be updated in August to coincide with the launch of the Fit Smart.

The band can store up to ten hours of exercise data, with battery life to match, so Adidas doesn’t envision it competing with all-day fitness bands like the Jawbone Up or Nike’s Fuelband. Instead, it will target those die-hard runners that don’t want the company’s Android-powered MiCoach Smart Run smartwatch, as well as anyone looking to start improving their general fitness. That means it won’t be worn 24/7, so it doesn’t matter as much about the utilitarian appearance or the rubberised finish, although it might put off anyone looking for a more generic fitness wearable.

Available in black or white, the miCoach Fit Smart is due to go on sale in the US around the beginning of August for roughly $200. It should cost £179 when it arrives in the UK, although it’s not clear if we’ll be seeing the same August launch date.
