Exclusive First Look: Microsoft Explorer Mini Mouse
Posted on 10 Sep 2008 at 10:30
Microsoft's new Explorer Mini Mouse looks like any other wireless optical mouse, but as we write this, we're using it on a carpet instead of a mouse mat. We've also tried it on leather, suede, polished wood, and our own skin. BlueTrack seems to work on every imaginable surface.
The familiar red glow of traditional optical and laser mice has been replaced by a wide blue beam that works with finely calibrated optical sensors that allow precise tracking on even the most difficult surfaces. This might seem like a minor development, but it's worth remembering that Microsoft's hardware team has a history of introducing small innovations that quietly change the way we use our PC, and brought both the optical mouse and the scroll wheel to the mainstream market.
The Explorer Mini doesn't require any special drivers. It associated instantly with its wireless transmitter and worked as soon as we plugged it in on Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. Windows and Mac users will also be able to benefit from the accompanying Intellipoint drivers. The mouse itself is small enough to slip easily into most laptop bags, but fitted comfortably into the palm of our right hand. The flexibility of BlueTrack is well suited to a laptop mouse, and makes the Explorer Mini a convenient alternative to the tiny touchpad on our ultra-portable.
Robbie Bach, President of Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division said that, with BlueTrack, the company would "reinvent our mouse business, starting today". For the moment, however, Microsoft continues to also make standard laser mice, such as the new Sidewinder X5 gaming mouse, due out later this month.
The Explorer Mini and the larger Explorer will be available in the UK from the 15th of October for £50 and £70 respectively.
