We tested using an Intel 975X motherboard and 1GB of DDR2 800MHz memory. As you can see from the scores below, both processors are incredibly fast. The Core 2 Extreme X6800 managed to beat AMD's FX-62 processor by a clear 29 points in Shopper's application benchmarks and both processors cost around the same; it's the fastest score we have ever seen. Furthermore, the E6700 scored 12 points higher than the FX-62 and it costs half the price. PCMark04 failed to run on both processors, as it did on the FX-62, due to an unavoidable problem with the software.

The Core 2 range shows a return to form for Intel, and AMD is going to have its work cut out if it is to deliver anything near as good. For the time being, Intel is the company from which you should be buying processors. The X6800 is expensive, though, and doesn't offer a huge performance increase over the E range, especially if you're not into overclocking. The E6700, though, is excellent value and incredibly quick, while Core 2 Duo processors with lower clock speeds are even cheaper.
