AMD's budget Sempron range is also available in the Socket AM2 boards, but the 3400+ is the fastest Sempron available for older Socket 754 motherboards.
Many Socket 754 motherboards do not support Sempron processors as standard, so you may need to update your motherboard's BIOS.
With a clock speed of just 2.0GHz and only 256KB of level 2 cache, the Sempron 3400+ is not a fast processor. It achieved a reasonable score of 87 in our audio-encoding benchmark, but poor scores in the video-encoding and image-editing tests of 90 and 127. Its overall score of 103 puts it at the bottom of the group. Overclocking the 3400+ to 2.2GHz increased its overall score to 111.
If you want to give your Socket 754 PC a new lease of life, the Sempron 3400+ is a cheap way to get a performance boost. If you're building a new budget PC you're better off with Intel's Celeron D 356 for £5 more, or a dual-core Pentium D 805 for an extra £20.
