Virgin Media TiVo 1TB review
Verdict:
There are still some navigation issues, but TiVo's huge breadth of content puts it up there with the best PVRs around

Excellent review of the TiVo service. I've had it for a few months as was lucky enough to be one of the first to receive it. Just thought I'd make a few comments.
Part of the review says that you haven't figured out a way to stop the mini window playing whilst browsing the menus. You can do this by pausing but also by pressing the "Slow" button on the remote. This removes the mini window.
Also, if there are clashes on all three tuners for recording, it won't tell you to reschedule at the time but it will automatically find another showing of the programme and record it at another time. If it can't find another one it will search the full 2 week guide for any of the others involved in the clash, cancel the original recording and record the alternative showing. This has proved invaluable for us as some nights we do have a fair few recordings that clash some nights. It will continue record different showings if clashing on series links.
Excellent review though and we would certainly agree at it being your Best Buy.

I recently switched to Tivo from V+ and pretty much hate it - menus are long and hard to use, no display (I like to see what channel I am on), no reminder function - which we used all the time on the V+ box - it's so involved to record a series now - just used to be press the yellow button, now you get a range of useless options that you are forced to choose from and I don't think the HD output is as good. The recorded programmes menu is a nightmare of folders and stuff you don't need - it's a bit like Samsung - great machinery, lousy software. I am just about ready to send it back - despite the extra recording time.

I didn't find the menus any harder to use than on any other PVR box (V+, Sky+, Freeview etc), they do take some getting used to admittedly, but they aren't bad, the central navigation through the directional arrows is intuitive.
Yes recording a series takes longer, but how often fo you do it, maybe a couple of times a week. It would be good to have a simple one-press record, two-press series link setup, and they should add this! The options aren't useless though, for example being to choose between new, or new and reruns, or choosing HD or non-HD channel, to save space?
The HD output is fine, and I'm watching on a 1080p 9ft projector screen. BBC HD is equal to that I've seen from any other HD broadcast source.
The software isn't perfect, bu then its still fairly new, and the failings of the V+ box are too numerous to go into here by comparison.
For a list go to http://virgintivo.blogspot.com and there's a link on the right to a handy PDF.

I love the tivo system BUT have now had two boxes go wrong by refusing to let me watch on hdmi. Called customer services after having the second box come up with the dialogue box 'hdmi not permitted'. They gave me all sorts of workarounds but nothing worked. Apparently virgin are aware of this problem and in my opinion have wheeled it out to the unsuspecting public before sorting it out. I would appreciate any feed back from other people who have had this problem.

Tivo.. the box thats easy to set up, easy to use, progs easier to find with the new menu, altogther a much more user friendly way of useing a VM box....Well what a load of crud
ITS..an annoying box with no change channel at start. NO simple menu interface,NO 1 click series record,it HAS..Very confusing menus, with an even more annoying plip plop sound to go with it.The favorites well i dont even know why it has them to be honest, and whats all this hickup section on the recordings.. another button to press..wheres the this wont record because something else is recording at this time..So my reveiw on this box is..OVER RATED MULTI FUNCTION BOX WITH TO MANY OFFSET MENUS..ITS NO SIMPLE INFACT ITS A LOT HARDER TO USE, VIRGIN NEED TO DO A LOT BEFORE THIS BOX IS USER FRIENDLY
Oh yes and NO jumping channels with your red or green buttons anymore.. geesh. took me 2 hours to programe in all my films and series,, it would have taken me 5 mins on my v+HD box
is this box really worth the hassel

whats the point?
I really don't get all the hype with the TiVo box. Its clunky, the interface is harder to navigate than the old box, it takes ages to power up and switch itself on, they have messed up the ease with which you could use the iplayer and the on demand service keeps breaking down. If we hadn't got it for free as a "sorry" from Virgin, I'd be giving it back. What's the point of having lots of storage when it just doesn't work and it keeps crashing?

TiVo JUNK
TiVo box is just JUNK the control is like a bar of soap the buttons are in the wrong place 2hands to go back to last channel why?
press 2 buttons on the V+box and your there, TiVo press 6 and your half way to were you wont to be (no joke)
no program reminder that's very annoying with live sport or the news you miss the begning of it so you have got to set an alarm or right it down to remind you, welcome back to the 1970s...
the HD is inferior to the Samsung V+Box if you like orange people bright colours and low definition then its for you!
Virgin will offer you 30mg broadband and cheep tv but that's just to make up for the very pore ViTo box and you cant change it bake for the Samsung V+Box BE AWARE!

Some Good More Bad
Taking V+ adding some things and making others worse suggests change for changes sake.
Being able to change volume on the remote- a big plus. More memory a big plus. Not having a one touch link to favourites- a real pain. Having to set a reminder by recording the programme, pointless. I cannot get back to previous channel so must be missing something. Not being able to see the channel number on the tivo box- why would anyone think less information is a step forward? Layout of buttons- awful. What shape were the people that tested this? Overall- more change for changes sake than improving something that already largely worked.

Updated review
Thanks for your comments on the review, having lived with the box for some time now I've updated the review to reflect its current state. I've answered some of your queries and complaints, but only if I thought they were serious annoyances for most users.
