Samsung demos 'unbreakable' display

Samsung has released details of what it describes as an "unbreakable" screen for its next-generation mobile handsets, due to launch within the next two years.
The new AMOLED display technology is described by OLED-Display.net as "thinner and lighter" than current models, which bodes well for the portability of future mobile phones - but it's the strength of the display which will impress most.
By replacing the glass in the panel with plastic - along with some changes to the materials used for the protective sheeting - Samsung hopes to perfect displays which are flexible enough to deform, rather than shatter, on impact. The result - if Samsung's experiments are anything to go by - would be a handset with a display which simply will not shatter, no matter how roughly you handle it.
It's a concept which could save both money and heartache: with shattered display glass one of the most common reasons for a handset to be replaced under insurance, and one of the easiest ways to break your shiny new device - up there with the dreaded "water ingress" - a way to protect against such damage is likely to give Samsung a significant selling point over rivals which do not produce their own display panels.
Samsung has posted a video detailing just how much abuse one of their unbreakable AMOLED panels can take, and it's certainly impressive - it's just a shame we'll have to wait two years to get our hands on one.
