Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus launched, Galaxy Fame and Galaxy Young coming soon

Samsung has introduced a range of new smartphones ahead of the Mobile World Congress trade show later this month, but has yet to announce their availability in the UK.

First up is the Galaxy S2 Plus, or i9105, which is a minor upgrade to the company's previous Galaxy S2. Designed for those who don't want to splash out on the flagship Galaxy S3, the Galaxy S2 Plus uses the same Super AMOLED Plus 480x800 display as the original S2, alongside 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM, with support for expansion through a micro-SD card slot supporting cards up to 64GB in size.

The same eight megapixel camera sits on the rear, while the dual-core Exynos processor has been replaced by a Broadcom BC28155 chip running at 1.2GHz - the same speed as its predecessor. It's hard, in fact, to see why the device earns a 'Plus' suffix - being near-identical to the Galaxy S2 but with half the storage capacity. The answer appears to come in the form of its software: as standard, the Galaxy S2 Plus runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean along with Samsung's own TouchWiz 5.0, the latest revision of the company's custom user interface.

The Galaxy S2 Plus is joined by two cheaper handsets aimed at younger or low-budget users. The Galaxy Fame has a 3.5in 320x480 display which uses TFT rather than AMOLED technology, behind which is a single-core 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage - which, again, can be upgraded by up to 64GB using a micro-SD card. The device includes a five megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash and VGA resolution front-facing camera, and runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

Finally, the Galaxy Young has roughly the same specifications and design with a few minor tweaks: behind a smaller 3.27in 480x320 TFT display is the same 1GHz processor and upgradeable 4GB of storage but with 768MB of RAM, which should help Android run smoothly. Sadly, the camera receives a downgrade to a 3.15-megapixel sensor, while the secondary camera has been removed altogether. As with the Galaxy Fame, the Galaxy Young runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

While the Galaxy S2 Plus has begun to roll out in Europe, it has not yet reached the UK, and both the Galaxy Fame and Galaxy Young have not been spotted outside Samsung's native Korea.
