US Blackberry Z10 prices slashed, UK could be next

The Blackberry Z10 has been significantly slashed in price at certain US retailers, suggesting a wider price drop could be due in the coming weeks.

According to American media reports, the BlackBerry Z10 has been reduced at retail groups including Best Buy, only four months after the US release.

At the end of last week, the Best Buy website showed Verizon and AT&T versions of the Z10 costing just $49 for a two-year contract tie-in. That's a considerable fall from the launch price of $199.99 on contract. The phone now costs $99.99 on the official AT&T and Verizon websites, again with a two-year contract.

The Washington Post noted that “these deep discounts coming so soon after the phone’s launch don’t bode well for BlackBerry, which is already facing mounting questions about tepid sales of its latest smartphones and its long-term prospects in the hardware market".

Company CEO Thorsten Heins received criticism during last week's annual shareholders' meeting, with at least one attendee calling the Z10 launch a 'disaster'.

BlackBerry is fighting a battle for survival as it has seen its once dominant market position undermined by Samsung and Apple. Even the company’s position as the number three mobile ecosystem is coming under intense pressure from Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform.

The company has yet to officially comment on the price drop, or say whether we can expect a similar decrease here in the UK, but if the Z10 has any chance of making an impact on the smartphone market it will need to cost less than high-end competition from the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One.
