Windows 7 introduced plenty of great new features, but didn't make any improvements to the Task Manager utility, which allows you to monitor and terminate active processes. Task Manager has a clumsy layout and provides minimal information, which makes it a poor tool for even the most basic task of ending a crashed process.
By contrast Process Explorer's interface is clean, simple and can be handily sorted by process, process ID or description. It has a massive range of useful options, including the ability to highlight newly opened and closed processes, search for specific keywords and display a lower pane to show which DLLs and memory-mapped files each process has loaded.
It's a great troubleshooting tool and can be configured to replace Task Manager's ctrl-alt-delete functionality simply by selecting a menu option.
