Windows Home Server adds Mac support

Microsoft has released an early test version of its next Windows Home Server version, which introduces support for Apple Mac systems to the platform for the first time.
Windows Home Server, which is designed to offer file storage and backup management services for home users with multiple PCs, has previously only supported Windows-based client systems - but Vail, the codename for the next release, adds support for backup and management functions on Mac OS X-based systems.
The test release - which CNET reports is available for download from Microsoft now - will hopefully allow equipment manufacturers to iron out any kinks in the software before producing products based around the technology.
Windows Home Server is not usually sold directly to users, but instead provided pre-installed on home server appliances such as the Asus Home Server TS.
The release of the Windows Home Server Vail Beta comes as Intel announces a new pair of 1.8GHz Atom processors, which Electronista claims are designed specifically for storage appliances running Windows Home Server.
While products based around the new processors - and Windows Home Server Vail - haven't yet been announced, it's thought that companies including LaCie, LG, Netgear, and Thecus are all planning updated versions of their storage servers to take advantage of the new features and performance improvements on offer.
