Ballmer confirms demise of Windows XP

PC users have shown no signs of wanting Microsoft to keep XP going, according to the company's chief executive Steve Ballmer.

Speaking in Belgium, Ballmer said there are no plans to extend its lifespan beyond 30 June, after which it will no longer be on sale.

"XP will hit an end-of-life," he said. "We have announced one. If customer feedback varies we can always wake up smarter but right now we have a plan for end-of-life for new XP shipments."

He said that most computers are now selling with Vista and that is what consumers are choosing to buy.

Ballmer was in Belgium to open Microsoft's new "innovation centre" in Mons, close to a Google data center. Ballmer said that the decision to base in the Walloon city had nothing to do with the presence of its arch rival.
