Meebo cashes in on web messaging
Posted on 1 May 2008 at 10:33
The proliferation of web-based instant messaging services seems set to continue after leading provide Meebo secured a reported $25 million in new funding.
Meebo already provides messaging services and chat room technology for many leading web businesses and media companies. Efforts to sell the company were abandoned last month when it failed to find a buyer who would meet its $250 million asking price. According to TechCrunch, the injection of new funds was based on a substantially lower valuation, around $200 million.
In addition to services for specific websites, Meebo also provides web-based access to the leading IM services - AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk and MSN/Windows Live Messenger - handy if desktop access is blocked by a firewall. It also provides a customised interface for acessing the same services on an iPhone or iPod touch.
