Skype makes play for video future
Posted on 18 Jun 2008 at 12:00
Skype has unveiled the next version of its internet communications software and aiming to popularise video chatting in the same way that it pioneered free voice calls over the internet.
The eBay-owned company will tomorrow release a Windows beta of Skype 4.0, revealing an all-new interface and higher-quality video imagery.
Skype president Josh Silverman described the new version as the biggest release in Skype's history.
"Skype users are communicating in many different modes - often at the same time," said Silverman. "We thought it was time for software to take that into account. Now video is really bringing together all those modes of communication."
New features include the ability to import contacts from Outlook, Outlook Express, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail, but not Gmail, and automatic detection of headsets.
Skype 4.0 beta is available now.
