Adobe teams up with search duo to offer Flash search
Posted on 1 Jul 2008 at 15:07
Adobe has teamed up with Google and Yahoo! to enhance the search industry leaders' search capabilities. Adobe is providing its Flash Player technology to enhance indexing of the Flash file format (SWF), which neither search engine is currently able to identify.
According to Adobe, the move will enable users to carry out more relevant searches of the rich internet applications (RIAs) and other content that runs in Adobe Flash Player. It will also mean that content producers will not need to amend their file formats to make content searchable by Yahoo! or Google.
"Until now it has been extremely challenging to search the millions of RIAs and dynamic content on the web, so we are leading the charge in improving search of content that runs in Adobe Flash Player," said David Wadhwani, general manager and vice president of the platform business unit at Adobe.
"We are initially working with Google and Yahoo! to significantly improve search of this rich content on the web, and we intend to broaden the availability of this capability to benefit all content publishers, developers and end users."
Google has already incorporated the technology into its search engine and Yahoo! will be introducing the search capabilities in a future update.
"We now help website owners that choose to design sites with Adobe Flash software by indexing this content better. Improving how we crawl dynamic content will ultimately enhance the search experience for our users," said Bill Coughran, senior vice president of engineering at Google.
Sean Suchter, vice president at Yahoo! search technology engineering added: "Yahoo! is committed to supporting webmaster needs with plans to support searchable SWF and is working with Adobe to determine the best possible implementation."
