Satnavs blamed for dangerous driving

Researchers have blamed satnav systems for causing drivers to lose concentration while driving. According to a survey carried out by Direct Line insurance, the gadgets have even been responsible for drivers crashing their motors.
The survey, which polled 2000 people, found that over one third of satnav users blamed the devices for causing them uncertainty or confusion. 11 per cent believe the devices led them to lose concentration, three per cent believe satnavs cause them to break road rules and two per cent say the device led them to have an accident or a near miss.
According to the survey, 26 per cent of motorists said their satnav system has told them to go through a no entry sign or vehicle-prohibited areas and 19 per cent blamed their gadgets for causing them to hesitate on busy roads.
10 per cent said they made a late or illegal turn because of the device, and seven per cent blamed their satnav's unrealistically short forecast time for making them late.
"Motorists need to realise that while satnavs are a helpful navigation tool, drivers should not follow their instructions to the detriment of road safety. If a satnav system gives you an instruction which is likely to endanger other road users, you should ignore it," Maggie Game, head of motor insurance for Direct Line, told the Associated Press.
"Satnavs are designed to make driving easier and safer. However, they will only do this if you take the time to learn how to properly use a system and understand the benefits of the technology."
