Apple blogs! on Mobile Me snafu

Apple has taken its first, tentative steps into the world of blogging, prompted by its chief executive Steve Jobs and the PR disaster that has been the launch of MobileMe.

With some MobileMe users still unable to get full access to their email, Apple has set up a Mobile Me Status blog to address ongoing issues with its revamped and rebranded suite of online applications.

"Steve Jobs has asked me to write a posting every other day or so to let everyone know what's happening with MobileMe, and I'm working directly with the MobileMe group to ensure that we keep you really up to date," an anonymous Apple staffer writes in the blog's first post. "In the 14 days since we launched, it's been a rocky road and we know the pain some people have been suffering. Be assured people here are working 24-7 to improve matters, and we're going to favour getting you new info hot off the presses even if we have to post corrections or further updates later."

Anonymous turns out to be David G - yes, the ever secretive Apple hasn't yet given him a surname - who goes on to announced that web access to email for affected subscribers has been restored. Desktop and mobile access are following.

In longer note on its support pages, Apple warns users not to attempt to make any changes to MobileMe password, email or storage settings until the services fully restored. It also says that email messages sent to around 10% of subscribers between 16 and 18 July have been lost forever. If users accessed these messages from a desktop client during this period, it should be possible to restore them from a backup. For more information see MobileMe: Email service interruption.
