Georgia accuses Russia as warfare turns "cyber"
Posted on 12 Aug 2008 at 11:53
The Georgian government has accused Russia of using hackers to wage "cyber warfare" on Georgian government websites. According to Georgian authorities, the hackers were deployed at the same time as the military, as conflict between the two countries heightens.
"A cyber warfare campaign by Russia is seriously disrupting many Georgian websites, including that of the Foreign Affairs Ministry," claimed the Georgian Foreign Ministry in a statement.
Ministry spokeswoman Nato Chikovani added: "Several government websites have gone down since the hacker attacks began on Friday."
However, a Kremlin spokesperson in Moscow denied the accusations. He said the Russian government's websites have experienced similar attacks.
"On the contrary, a number of internet sites belonging to the Russian media and official organisations have fallen victim to concerted hacker attacks," he said.
