TfL drops Oyster card system
Posted on 12 Aug 2008 at 12:22
Transport for London (TfL) has terminated its contract to run London's Oyster card system. TfL has ended the £100 million a year deal with Oyster operator TranSys, claiming it does not offer sufficient value for money.
The authority said it is convinced that any new contract will deliver enhanced services for less money and will drive significant savings. In a statement, TfL said that Mayor Boris Johnson is keen to improve the Oyster card to make it even more attractive for Londoners.
TfL also stated that it will make sure this happens quickly and in a way that represents the best value.
"Transport for London is committed to delivering value for money across all of its services," said Shashi Verma, director of fares and ticketing at TfL.
"As part of this we are looking at more cost effective ways to manage and develop the Oyster card system that we expect will save millions over the next few years. The savings will be reinvested to deliver further improvements in London's transport system," he added.
TfL claimed the cancellation of the contract had nothing to do with recent Oyster card debacles which saw passengers given wrongful fines, as well as passengers being able to tavel for free, in recent weeks.
