Tiffany appeals eBay ruling

US jeweller Tiffany has said it will appeal a recent court ruling that cleared eBay of responsibility for the sale of counterfeit products on its website. The jeweller confirmed in a statement that it has filed an appeal as the saga, which started in 2004, continues.
Ebay has hit back, saying that Tiffany's insistence to win the case is hindering its efforts to combat the sale of counterfeit goods.
"Tiffany's decision to carry this litigation on after the District Court's decision doesn't do anything to combat counterfeiting," said an eBay spokeswoman. "The best way to stop counterfeiting is ongoing collaboration between companies, government agencies and law enforcement."
The legal battle began in 2004, when Tiffany sued eBay, claiming the online auctioneer ignored that fake Tiffany goods were being sold on its site. The battle continued, but looked to be put to an end when in July 2008, a US judge rejected all claims, and held that brand owners are ultimately responsible for protecting their own trademarks.
Ebay has been at the centre of a number of court cases, recently being ordered to pay £30 million to luxury brand group LVMH. Ebay has said it will appeal this ruling
